Dr. Ebrahim Ahmadisharaf is recruiting a PhD student to join my research group in the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department positioned in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The PhD student will receive a competitive stipend, full tuition waiver and benefits. The student can begin as early as Fall 2025 but no later than Spring 2026.
Research
The student will be primarily working on harmful algae blooms (HABs). A key aim is to advance the understanding of driving factors and dominant mechanisms of HABs under various environmental conditions. The research will support the development of mitigation and adaptation strategies. This research will support decisions, policies and plans that enhance the ecological resilience of coastal areas. The student will be given opportunities to collaborate with internationally recognized experts in the field from academia, government and private sector. The student is expected to publish the project findings in peer-reviewed journal articles. Opportunities will be also provided to the student to present the research at conferences.
Required/Desired Qualifications and Skills
- Holding a bachelor’s (for direct PhD applicants) or master’s degree in engineering (civil, water resources or environment), sciences (environmental, earth or computer) or any closely related field
- Prior research experience related to environmental and water resources issues
- Understanding the underlying processes related to HABs and pertinent water quality parameters
- Computer programming (R, MATLAB or Python), big data analytics, machine learning, remote sensing, water quality modeling, time series analyses and geospatial analyses (e.g., GIS)
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team, with strong communication, presentation (oral and written), and fast learning skills
About Dr. Ahmadisharaf
Dr. Ahmadisharaf's research lab has projects funded by various agencies, including NASA, NSF, USDA, NASEM and EPA. FSU is classified by Carnegie as an R1 rank (Doctoral Universities — Highest Research Activity) in the capital of Florida, Tallahassee. The CEE Department is under FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, a joint college between FSU and Florida A&M University (FAMU). The department is home to the Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response (RIDER) Center, a highly interdisciplinary research center with several labs and facilities related to water resources, environment, construction and transportation. Tallahassee is also located within a short drive to multiple national parks and beaches, providing opportunities for outdoor activities.
